Hippos in WPE, why not use those models for Full Release? Makes no sense to put them in for WPE, and have mentioned in scribe etc, then take out to replace with crocodile. Croc would've needed new modelling etc to make, while it previously existed for hippo.

Actually, the moas of Guild Wars are based (physically) on Phorusracids (better known as "Terror Birds"), extinct predatory birds from South America...

Saying that hippos or on an endangered list is fairly stupid. Tigers, white and orange are both endangered, lynx are also endangered. To say that because it is endangered is a reason for taking it out of a game is pretty stupid.

Download and Technological concerns. Sounds to me like their concerns are:
56k users
Users with not top of the line computers
It sounds like the Hippo is having some issue with something like animation, polygon count, or perhaps its triggering some bug thats lagging or crashing computers.

I don't usually openly criticize Anet, or any game dev. That's probably because I am one (no, really), and I'd rather it not happen to me. ^_^
But...
This has got to be the most ill-concieved, poorly excused move I've seen lately. Showing a fully working demo, then REMOVING things, is a sure way to make exactly zero people happy, and a bunch pissed.
Sure, it's not a big thing. One less pet. Whee. But how many people played the preview and were eagerly looking forward to such an amazingly cute pet?
Now, how many people experienced horrible, game-stopping technical problems when in the vicinity of a hippo during the preview? Go on, speak up...
"Download and technology concerns" for an asset that was already in the game and working? Really? What exactly were these problems that were so slight that no one noticed them, yet were so severe they couldn't be fixed without an unreasonable expenditure of development time, thus justifying the disappointment of many players?
Okay, I've ranted enough for someone who has a moa bird and wouldn't give it up for the world. This problem doesn't apply to me, so I should shut up.
But still, I feel honestly sorry for everyone who bought NF and started playing, looking forward to their cute new hippo. It was definitely the most unique and cutest pet in Elona. R.I.P. little hippos.
And to the artists that couldn't get a simple creature working in-game (that was already working)... tsk, tsk.

Thanks for the definite answer Gaile. I appreciate it, though I cannot say I’m not very disappointed.
I even named my ranger to fit having a hippo for a pet.
(Rhedd: offtopic, but the ranger on my neglected 2nd account also has a Moa, and she is also name-appropriate to her owner and species. I like her a lot, but she’s not right for this new ranger.)
Ah well, I’ll find something I like.

Come to think of it, my ele is named fit to have a moa (Titanis Walleri was a species of phorusracid), and originally DID as a matter of fact...

Well, there is NEVER going to be a Panda pet.
The reason is as follows:
In China (one of the places Guild Wars is sold) it is ILLEGAL to hunt or kills a Panda. As such, it is also illegal to depict the hunting or killing of a panda (which would happen often if it was a pet).

lol, that's pretty funny because in Guild Wars, a warrior skill named "I Will Avenge You!" triggers off of ranger pets.
Have you ever played IWAY tomcruisejr?

Tonight I charmed a crocodile and named it "Hippo."
*Sigh* I guess it'll have to do. At least it'll be a conversation starter:
"Pet - Hippo is dead!"
"HEY! You got a... oh, never mind."

And how? By using the Warthog squeleton? I doubt they are adding more movement models, just reusing already existing...
